DATE-NUT BARS
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup lightly packed brown sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup chopped dates
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
Powdered sugar
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease an 8-inch square pan.
In a medium bowl, combine butter or margarine, granulated sugar
and 1 cup flour. Using a pastry blender or fork, combine ingredients
until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press crumbs lightly on bottom
of greased pan. Bake 15 minutes or until lightly browned. In a medium
bowl, combine brown sugar, eggs and vanilla. Stir in baking powder,
salt and 1/3 cup flour. Add dates and walnuts; spoon mixture over
baked crust. Return to oven for 15 to 20 minutes more or until firm.
Cool in pan. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Cut into bars. Makes
16 to 20 bars.
